How Much Does It Really Cost To Start a Lemonade Stand
Starting a lemonade stand business can cost anywhere from $500 to over $2,500 depending on how much you want to start out with. When thinking of a lemonade stand, many people picture the street-side stand you set up as a kid. Turning your lemonade stand into a legal, compliant, and profitable business requires more planning and investment than most expect.
In this guide, I’ll break down the real costs to start a lemonade stand. I’ll show you three realistic options and explain what the tradeoffs are with each.

Quick Answer: Lemonade Stand Startup Costs
- Minimal Setup: $500 – $650
- Profitable and Compliant Setup: $1,200 – $1,400
- Fully Branded Setup: $2,500+
For most people starting out, I recommend the middle option.
Three Ways To Start a Lemonade Stand
Tier 1 – Minimal Setup ($618.67)
This is the cheapest way to get started and works best if you are:
- Testing demand
- Doing one-off or small events
- Comfortable moving slowly
All of my pricing assumes you have to purchase everything new, but if you already have any of this equipment, I highly recommend using it to reduce costs. Alternatively, if you can find it used and in good condition, get the best deal you can.
Minimal Lemonade Making and Serving Equipment
- Hand Muddler – $5.89
- Lemon-Cutting Knife – $13.59
- Water Dispenser – $9.99
- 240 32-oz Plastic Deli Containers with Lids – $54.78
- Straw Hole Puncher – $7.99
- 3,000 Individually Wrapped Straws – $11.88
Minimal Lemonade Stand Equipment
- A 10×10 canopy – $149.99
- Durable 6′ Folding Table – $56.25
- Table Cover – $27.99
- Handwashing station – $49.99
- Hand Soap – $2.97
- Paper Towels – $2.96 (for each roll)
- 5-gal Dump Bucket – $11.96
- 3-bin wash-rinse-sanitize setup – $31.99
- Dish Soap – $4.98
- Steramine Sanitizer – $38.80
- Sanitizer Test Strips – $7.95
- Cooler – $99.98
- Ice Scoop – $11.76
- 1/4 Cup Measuring Cup – $6.99
- Food Handling Gloves – $9.99
This low-cost setup gets you TFE-compliant in many jurisdictions, but you will move slower, look less professional, and struggle during rushes. So, this setup is great for small events, but not ideal for busy festivals or long-term growth.

Tier 2 – My Recommendation: Profitable and Compliant Setup ($1,289.76)
This is the setup I recommend to anyone who wants to:
- Operate as a legal business
- Look professional
- Make real money at events
Business Setup
- Business Registration: one-time $100 (may vary by state)
- Accounting Software: $38 (I use QuickBooks, recurring monthly expense)
- Stand Insurance: $74.75 (I use FLIP, and this includes the start-up fee, $25.92 recurring monthly expense afterwards)
- TFE Permit Application: $40 (this is for Virginia and may vary by locality)

Recommended Lemonade Stand Equipment

- 3 Table Covers – $83.97 (27.99 each)
- Digital Thermometer – $19.99
- Tarp – $13.99
- Two Food Storage Containers (one for sugar, one to hold your ice scoop) – $22.99
(Optional) Light Branding For Your Lemonade Stand
- Logo Design – $0 – $400
- You can make your logo for free in Canva, or hire a graphic designer on a platform such as Fiverr or Upwork.
- Website – $0 – $200 per year
- Optional, but great for building a social footprint.
- Branded Stickers – between $0.25 – $0.75 per sticker
- Excellent for advertising at events. Find the cheapest sticker you can find, as they are single-use on your cups.
The biggest changes between tier one and two are:
- Full business setup
- Upgraded lemonade-making equipment
- Three tables instead of one
This allows you to operate and handle lines quicker, and opens the door to larger events. This is my recommended tier because most vendors can recoup this investment in 2-4 good events. This allows you to create cash-flow before upgrading to fully branded, top of the line equipment.

Tier 3 – Fully Branded Setup ($2,772,47)
This setup is focused on marketing and brand recognition, not immediate ROI. I encourage you to check out other branding companies, but I have had great success with EZ Up.

Since this tier focuses heavily on branding, so I highly recommend hiring a quality graphic designer who can put together a logo and branding package for you.
Ongoing Costs
Even though almost all of the expenses are upfront and one-time, there are a few recurring expenses to budget for. I have already mentioned some (accounting software and insurance), but the others are important too.
- Ingredients (lemons, sugar, syrups, water, ice)
- Event Fees (can be anywhere from $0 to $100+ depending on the event)
- POS processing fees
- Bank fees if you don’t have the required balance
The good news is all of these expenses are very low, so as long as you plan for it, one or two good events can insulate you through the slow months.
How Fast Can You Make Your Money Back?
Not every event is the same, and you will quickly learn how to distinguish between good and bad events, but I was able to completely recoup my investment within my first month.
In my first month:
- I worked two events
- Grossed over $1,400
- Netted just over $1,000
My first month in business was an October, so I was even more impressed that I could perform like this in an off-month. And because I borrowed a canopy and coolers, these two events more than covered my intial expenses.
How To Start Cheap Without Cutting Corners
If you are on a very tight budget:
- Borrow as much equipment from friends and family as possible
- Buy used equipment when you can
- Delay extra expenses like custom branding
Do not cut corners on health department requirements or cleanliness. The health department can fine you, charge you, and shut you down for good. And customers consume with their eyes, so if your stand is a mess, your sales will suffer greatly.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth The Cost?
For the right person, yes. A lemonade stand offers:
- Low startup risk
- Flexible scheduling
- Minimal monthly expenses
